“Glass City”

The Letterpress Printed Broadside

This is such a beautiful piece—and now a destination in Toledo, OH. Located in the lobby of Hiltons at Toledo Downtown, I wanted to document a few things about the creation and collaboration of this broadside.

This is a colophon of sorts: "Glass City" was a two part letterpress printed edition with epigraph "returning to Toledo seventeen years later." This print was letterpress printed on custom handmade 100% cotton paper from Porridge Papers, 1889 Collection.

The second edition was printed in a small batch of twenty-five letterpress prints for the #HTpoetry23 event held March 31, 2023 as a kick-off to National Poetry Month at Hiltons at Toledo Downtown.

Both editions were printed using antique letterpress woodtype puctuations to form the skyline of Toledo and text copy is handset metal type Nicolas Cochin 72pt, Nicolas Cochin Italic 36pt, and Cochin 18pt. The Nicolas Cochin is antique type sourced from John Horn of Shooting Star Press in Little Rock, AR, also home to Sibling Rivalry Press, publisher of Slide to Unlockfrom which “Glass City” was chosen. The Cochin was specially cast at Swamp Press by Ed Rayher.
